The Marathon Marathon Project (hereinafter τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject), takes place in Athens at the Acropolis Museum on October 31, 2010 under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The project takes as its point of departure the impressive international array of marathon-format events and in particular “The Marathon Project”, which curator Hans Ulrich Obrist conceived in Stuttgart in 2005. Obrist conceived this as a transdisciplinary model which, as György Kepes said, tries to go beyond the fear of pooling knowledge in order to create a platform for the production of new realities.
This format was then launched in 2006 at the Serpentine Gallery, as the Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon, the fruit of a collaboration with Serpentine Gallery director Julia Peyton-Jones, who in 2000 conceived of the annual Pavilion commission, the world’s first and most ambitious architectural project of its kind. During the 24-hour event of the Serpentine Interview Marathon, Rem Koolhaas and Hans Ulrich Obrist interviewed seventy-two leading cultural figures based in London, mapping the city through conversations with the protagonists who inhabit it. The Interview Marathon aimed to formulate new ways of mapping or charting the activities of a city while acknowledging its perennial mutability. Similarly, the Experiment Marathon in 2007 (with Olafur Eliasson) mapped the interface between art and science, while the 2008 Manifesto Marathon charted artists’ relationships to politics, polemics and poetics, a theme which was further explored in the 2009 Poetry Marathon and the recent Map Marathon in 2010.
The apparent tautology in the title of the Athens event comes from the fact that τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject —the “Marathon of the Marathon” —is being held as part of the celebrations of the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon and the organization this year of the Golden Marathon. This meta-Marathon, the discourse about the Marathon, provides an opportunity to creatively re-link the message of the Marathon not only to its place of origin but also to the numerous places around the world where this message was relayed and multiplied.
The project is being realized at a historical conjuncture which is proving to be decisive for re-shaping the broader features of Greek society and culture. The event explores such topics as the new understanding of humanism that has emerged within contemporary culture, the re-interpretation of innovation in a globalized world of hybrid realities, and the role of the arts in the memorization of the past, present and future. Other topics include the renegotiation of the idea of the Other (which comes to the fore in the Battle of Marathon itself and in Aeschylus’s Persians) and the symbolic transformation of Pheidippides from soldier to warrior-runner.
Artists, writers, poets, philosophers and scientists from Greece and abroad take part in τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject, which is being curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Nadja Argyropoulou.
The proceedings will be published in book form and distributed internationally.
The Marathon Marathon or τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject, is being organized by the non-profit, cultural initiative, Saprofyta and realized in cooperation with the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art and the Acropolis Museum.

Η εκδήλωση “τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject”, θα πραγματοποιηθεί στην Αθήνα, στο Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, στις 31 Οκτωβρίου, 2010, με την αιγίδα και υποστήριξη του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού και Τουρισμού.
Η διοργάνωση έχει ως αφορμή την εντυπωσιακή παγκόσμια διασπορά εκδηλώσεων ‘Μαραθωνίου τύπου’(format), και ιδιαίτερα την διεθνή εκδήλωση με τον γενικό τίτλο, ‘The Marathon Project’, την οποία συνέλαβε σαν ιδέα και πρωτοπαρουσίασε στην Στουτγάρδη το 2005, ο επιμελητής Χανς Ούλριχ Όμπριστ.
Ο Όμπριστ συνέλαβε το μαραθώνιο δρώμενο ως ένα διεπιστημονικό μοντέλο, το οποίο, όπως είπε ο Gyorgy Kepes, προσπαθεί να υπερβεί τον φόβο που προκαλεί η διάχυση της γνώσης ώστε να προκύψει μια πλατφόρμα για τη σύσταση νέων πραγματικοτήτων.
Το format αυτό παρουσιάστηκε στη συνέχεια, το 2006, στην Serpentine Gallery του Λονδίνου, με τον τίτλο, Τhe Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon, αποτέλεσμα συνεργασίας με την Διευθύντρια της Serpentine, Julia Peyton-Jones, η οποία συνέλαβε και το ετήσιο Pavilion commission, ένα παγκόσμια πρωτότυπο και μοναδικό στο είδος του αρχιτεκτονικό πρόγραμμα σε σχέση με τους Μαραθώνιους. Κατά τη διάρκεια του 24ωρου Interview Marathon, ο Όμπριστ και ο αρχιτέκτονας Ρέμ Κούλχας πήραν συνέντευξη από 72 πρωτοπόρους καλλιτέχνες και επιστήμονες, οι οποίοι ως κάτοικοι του Λονδίνου συνέθεσαν ένα χάρτη εμπειριών της ζωής τους στην πόλη. Έτσι ο Μαραθώνιος αυτός διαμόρφωσε νέες μεθόδους ανίχνευσης των δραστηριοτήτων μιας πόλης αναγνωρίζοντας ταυτόχρονα την αιώνια μεταβλητότητά της. Αντίστοιχα ο Experiment Marathon, τo 2007 (με τον καλλιτέχνη Όλαφουρ Έλιασον ως συνεργάτη) χαρτογράφησε την περιοχή ανάμεσα στην τέχνη και την επιστήμη, ενώ ο Manifesto Marathon του 2008 επικεντρώθηκε στις σχέσεις των καλλιτεχνών με την πολιτική, την πολεμική και την ποίηση. Η ποίηση ήταν και το θέμα ενός χωριστού Μαραθωνίου – the Poetry Marathon- το 2009, ενώ με την χαρτογράφηση της επόμενης δεκαετίας ασχολήθηκε ο πλέον πρόσφατος Μαραθώνιος του 2010 – The Map Marathon.
Η προφανής ταυτολογία του τίτλου της εκδήλωσης της Αθήνας προκύπτει από το γεγονός ότι τo “τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject” -‘ο του Μαραθωνίου Μαραθώνιος’ δηλαδή- θα πραγματοποιηθεί ως μέρος των εορτασμών της επετείου των 2500 χρόνων από τη Μάχη του Μαραθώνα και της διοργάνωσης του φετινού Χρυσού Μαραθώνιου Δρόμου. Αυτός ο Μετα-Μαραθώνιος, ο λόγος, δηλαδή, περί του Μαραθωνίου, προσφέρει την ευκαιρία να συνδεθεί εκ νέου, δημιουργικά και κατά χώρον, το ‘Μαραθώνιο μήνυμα’ τόσο με το κέντρο εκπόρευσής του, όσο και με τους πολυάριθμους αναμεταδότες και πολλαπλασιαστές του διεθνώς.
Η συγκεκριμένη εκδήλωση πραγματοποιείται σε μια χρονική στιγμή και μια μεταιχμιακή συνθήκη, η οποία αποδεικνύεται κρίσιμη και αποφασιστική για τη διαμόρφωση της ευρύτερης φυσιογνωμίας της Ελλάδας. Ο στοχασμός για έναν νέο Ανθρωπισμό, όπως τον αναδεικνύει η σύγχρονη κουλτούρα, η ερμηνεία και επανερμηνεία της αρχαιότητας, των τοπικών παραδόσεων και της πρωτοπορίας, σε ένα παγκοσμιοποιημένο κόσμο υβριδικών μορφών, η επαναδιαπραγμάτευση της έννοιας του Άλλου (η οποία αναδύεται μέσα από την ίδια τη Μάχη του Μαραθώνα και τους ‘Πέρσες’ του Αισχύλου), η συμβολική μεταμόρφωση του πολεμιστή στον αγωνιστή Φειδιππίδη, και ο ρόλος των τεχνών στην απο-μνημόνευση του παρελθόντος, του παρόντος και του μέλλοντος, είναι μερικά από τα θέματα αυτής της διοργάνωσης.
Επιμελητές της εκδήλωσης “τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject” είναι οι Hans Ulrich Obrist και Νάντια Αργυροπούλου και συμμετέχουν καλλιτέχνες, λογοτέχνες, ποιητές, φιλόσοφοι και επιστήμονες, από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό.
Το υλικό της εκδήλωσης θα εκδοθεί με τη μορφή βιβλίου με διεθνή διανομή.
Τo “τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject” οργανώνει η μη κερδοσκοπική, πολιτιστική πρωτοβουλία ‘Σαπρόφυτα’.
Πραγματοποιείται με τη συμβολή του Ιδρύματος Σύγχρονης Τέχνης ΔΕΣΤΕ και τη συνεργασία του Μουσείου Ακρόπολης.
Τo “τουμαραθωνίουmarathonproject” οργανώθηκε με την αιγίδα και υποστήριξη του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού και Τουρισμού.
